PEA: The Non-Dairy Muscle Builder

Not so long ago, the main protein powders available at the stores were whey-based protein. If you recently went to the protein supplement aisles of your favorite store you have probably found that plant-based protein powders are taking up more and more shelf’s space.

What Exactly is Whey-Protein

It is one of the two main types of protein found in milk – the other being casein. It is the liquid part of milk that separates when making cheese and about 20% of the protein in cow’s milk is made up of whey.

One of the main problems with whey protein is that the milk often comes from conventional factory farms where animals will eat food that was sprayed with pesticides and cows are given antibiotics and growth hormones to be as profitable as possible but leaving you with a protein shake full of unwanted chemicals that will alter your health.

Drinking pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones after a hard workout at the gym are far from the healthiest choice you can make. On top of that, whey-based protein powders often contain lactose which most of us are either allergic or intolerant to.

Pea is For Protein

A better option for your health and the environment is an organic plant-based protein powder.

You are not convinced that a plant can help build muscles? In a recent study, 161 men age 18 to 35 entered a 12-week weight training program three days per week while taking 50 grams of pea or whey protein per day, or a placebo.

After 12 weeks, the pea protein group had a 20.2% increase in bicep muscle thickness compared to 15.6% for whey and 8.6% for the placebo (1). The pea protein group saw an even greater increase in muscle mass than the whey group.

One of the main differences with whey protein is that pea protein has more of the amino acid arginine which is a major player when it comes to building muscle.

I recommend looking for a pea protein powder that is organic and GMO-free so you can feel good about drinking your post-workout shake knowing that you aren’t filling your body with unwanted pesticides, antibiotics or hormones.

Vegan Pro pea protein powder contains no lactose, dairy, gluten, soy, wheat; it is made of organic yellow pea and is GMO-free. I recommend this product to my clients and it is the one I personally use daily.
